About Me

I am a part-time Title I Reading Specialist with Davidson County Schools in Lexington, North Carolina.  This is my first year in this position.  I will be teaching kindergartners who have been retained who struggle in reading and writing.  I look forward to this new and exciting opportunity to work with these young children.  I live in Archdale with my husband, Averett.  He is a pharmacist with Walgreens Pharmacy in Greensboro.

About Teaching…

I have taught school for 13 1/2 years.  I did my student teaching in 2nd grade and when I graduated, teaching positions were hard to come by.  In September of 1991, I received my first teaching position teaching preschoolers with special needs in Yadkin County.  This was definitely new to me.  I had worked with preschoolers in Sunday School and had been to preschool conferences but did not have experience working with preschoolers who had special needs.  For the next few years I learned so much.  I attended conferences and workshops relating to birth-kindergarten and children with special needs.  I learned about children with autism, down’s syndrome, speech-language disorders, etc.  I learned how to write IEP’s.  I taught small groups from five to eight children in a classroom for four years.  In the afternoons, I visited day cares and child development centers to work with students one-on-one.  During those four years teaching preschool, I received my B-K certificate.

I decided I wanted to try the elementary classroom so I taught a K-1 combination my fifth year of teaching.  What an experience to say the least!  I relocated to Guilford County Schools the following year to teach in a Chapter 1 preschool program.  The next year I was back in kindergarten.  After meeting my husband and marrying in November of 2000, we moved to Virginia where he is from.  I taught in kindergarten in Person County for the last half of the school year.  While living in Virginia the remaining two years, I substituted in the Virginia school system.  We relocated back to North Carolina where I currently teach in Davidson County Schools.  Before my Title I position, I taught kindergarten for four years in Davidson County.

I became interested in teaching Title I Reading while meeting a friend who had previously taught in Title I.  She taught kindergarten with me for several years following her Title I experience and we discussed teaching reading frequently.  Later, another colleague of mine mentioned she was going to work on her master’s in reading education through ASU and she encouraged me to do the same.  I decided this would be a great route for me to pursue because I wanted to learn more about teaching reading and it would be beneficial if I stayed in the classroom or taught in small groups.  My friend who previously taught in Title I and I started in the program together and it has been a wonderful learning experience.

Things I Do Not Enjoy

I do not enjoy it when adults can not get along with each other.

I do not enjoy being sick… Especially having migraines!

I do not enjoy it when I run out of money and can not go shopping.

  1. Thanks for sharing! You certainly have a diverse background in teaching! I love the perspective you bring to our class having worked with the EC’s program and preschool.

Oh yes, I see why you chose the “smoothie” theme at first; this theme is nice, too. You and Abbie have something in common! 🙂

  3. Hi~

I am an elementary librarian in Washington. I loved your Hershey kiss poem and would love to use it as my poetry example on my poetry genre table sign. That means, only one copy would be made and it would be affixed to a table. Would that be all right?

  4. Thank you. I’m glad you liked the poem. Yes, anything that will promote education is definitely okay with me so feel free to use it.
