Barbara Mandrell An Alphabet Book
Alphabet Book

Defenses
I Am Poem – I chose to write an I Am Poem from the perspective of Barbara. The poem tells about Barbara and her life. I will need to explain some of the poem for the reader to understand it if he is not familiar with Barbara Mandrell. First, “short and energetic” means that she is five foot two inches tall and she has a lot of energy. When she talks about the driver crossing the center lane, she is talking about the automobile accident that she was in. She refers to the Colorado Rockies. She and her family go skiing there. She pretends to be a pilot because she actually got to fly a jet with supervision one time. She refers to Mark White. He is the boy who was killed in the accident. I chose to write this poem because it gives information about Barbara and who she is. Writing this poem helped me put myself in the shoes of Barbara Mandrell.
Acrostic Poem – I chose to write an acrostic poem about Barbara Mandrell from my perspective. This poem gives information about who Barbara is.
Certificate of Birth – I chose to design a certificate of birth from the perspective of the hospital. This is not an official birth certificate with mother’s maiden name and information about the baby but is a certificate that would be presented to the parents of a newborn. This piece was chosen to learn about when and where Barbara was born. The audience is Barbara and anyone whom she needs to present her certificate to.
Radio Announcement – I chose to make a radio announcement to learn more about Barbara Mandrell and where she got her start from when she was young. The announcement is about being at the Showboat Casino and Hotel with Joe Maphis. This announcement is from the perspective of the radio announcer and the audience is the listeners of Country Music Radio. By using this genre, it helps the writer learn to make a public radio announcement.
Flyer – I chose this genre to learn about the Mandrell Family Band and places they perform. The audience is the public. This flyer is used to announce and invite people to hear the band play.
Ribbon Award – I chose this genre to show that Barbara won Miss Oceanside in 1965. It is from the perspective of the judges and presented to Barbara Mandrell.
Newspaper Article – I chose to write a newspaper article about Barbara’s wedding because I wanted to learn more about her wedding day. The audience is the public who reads the newspaper. It is written from the perspective of a newspaper journalist. This newspaper article gives you information about an event.
Wedding Invitation – I chose to write a wedding invitation about Barbara’s wedding to learn more about when it took place. It is written from the perspective of Barbara and Ken and the guests are the audience.
Marriage Certificate – I chose to write an official marriage certificate. This helped me learn more about her wedding and how to prepare a certificate with the needed information. It is written from the perspective of the State of California with the people involved writing the correct information. Marriage certificates are an official document of a marriage between two people.
Certificate of Marriage – I chose to write a certificate of marriage. This helped me learn about Barbara’s wedding. It is written from the perspective of the minister who married them. A Certificate of Marriage is presented to the bride and groom from the minister.
Newspaper Article – I chose to write the newspaper article to learn about her first single released. It is written from the perspective of the newspaper journalist. The audience is the public.
Birth Announcements – I chose to write birth announcements to learn about her three children and when they were born. They are written from the perspective of Barbara Mandrell and the audience is family and friends whom Barbara sends them to. Birth Announcements help you learn about the birth of a child.
Newspaper Article – I chose to write the newspaper article to learn about her hit record, “The Midnight Oil,” hitting the top of the country charts. It is written from the perspective of the newspaper journalist. The audience is the public.
Certificates and Trophies – I chose to write certificates and trophies for awards that Barbara won throughout her career. These were written so you can learn about what awards she received and what years she received them. These were written from the perspective of the people giving the award and are received by Barbara. Certificates and trophies give you information about a reward or recognition received.
Television Announcement – I chose to write a television screen announcement that is displayed on the television and announced that a program is coming on. This helps you learn about her variety show that aired in the 1980’s. It is written from the perspective of NBC and the audience is the television viewers.
Newspaper Article – I chose to write the newspaper article to learn about her car accident in 1984. It is written from the perspective of the newspaper journalist. The audience is the public who reads the newspaper. Newspaper articles can give you information about an event.
Floral Arrangement Get Well Cards – I chose to write these cards to show whom Barbara received some of her flowers from. Writing cards helps you learn to write the appropriate words for the occasion. The cards are written from the perspective of her friends who sent them and she is the audience. Floral arrangement cards show you people care and give the name of the person who sent them.
Billboard Lighted Sign – I chose to write this to learn about her first concert she gave after her accident. Writing this helped me learn how to present important information. It is written from the perspective of the producers and the audience is the public.
Christmas Card – I chose to write this card to learn about what Barbara and her family enjoy doing. They enjoy skiing in the Colorado Rockies. The Christmas card genre is important for writers to be familiar with so they can send cards. It is written from the perspective of the family and the audience is the one who receives it such as their friends and family.
Foreword – I chose this genre to present Barbara’s autobiography released in 1990. This genre helped me to learn to summarize briefly what I learned by reading the book. The foreward is written from the perspective of me and the audience is people who would like to read the book. Forewards give you information about what a person thought about the book.
Billboard Lighted Sign – I chose to write this to learn about Barbara’s last concert when she retired from Country music. Writing this helped me learn how to present important information. It is written from the perspective of the producers and the audience is the public.
Letter – I chose to write this letter from the perspective of Barbara Mandrell. I am the audience and Barbara shares some of her recipes. Writing letters help the writer learn the important parts of a letter.
Recipes – I chose to write some of Barbara’s recipes on recipe cards. These are actual recipes of Barbara’s that were in the Mandrell Family Cookbook. These were written from the perspective of Barbara and I am the audience. These recipes exist so you can enjoy some of her favorite recipes. Recipes give you great entrees to cook.
CD Cover – I chose to design a CD cover from my perspective. I dedicated the CD with songs to Barbara and listed the songs I recorded on the back cover. The audience is Barbara and her country music fans. CD covers give you information about the artist and list the songs sung on the CD.
Songs on CD – I chose to sing some of Barbara’s well-known country hits. I sang these songs as a tribute to her from myself. She also has A Tribute to Barbara Mandrell from some of her friends who are in the country music business. They sing these songs as well as some of her other favorites. The audience is the public who can learn more about Barbara’s country music songs.
Alphabet Book – I chose to write an alphabet book because it gives facts and pictures and tells about the life of Barbara Mandrell. It is written from my perspective. The audience is for people who want to learn more about Barbara Mandrell. An ABC Book gives you information from A to Z.

I loved your project. I have grown up listening to country music. My family never listened to anything else. I think you’ve put a lot of effort into your project. I’m sure it would have been easy to get carried away with the tremendous amount of information you had. It’s nice to know the history a musician’s life. You can then see how their songs corelate with their personal life.

I LOVED your project! you put so much time into it, and I could tell you really cared about your topic. Your scrapbook and ABC book were so neat, and your CD! that was great! =0) I knew a lot of the songs you mentioned, but I’ve heard all remakes of them, never knew they weren’t new!

Wow! I can’t believe how much time you must have put into this assignment. It was so interesting hearing your presentation and learning about Mrs. Mandrell
And thanks so much for being willing to share your song!
Great job!

WOW…it was so cool to see how dedicated and interested you were in this project. So creative, I loved how you recorded one of her songs in your own voice, your students are going to love it!

I loved your project. Thank you for teaching me so much about Barbara Mandrell! Up until class I did not even know who she was. Now I feel like I know a lot about her. Your book that you were created was so thorough it amazed me, but I know how you felt not wanted to stop, feeling like it was not complete. Everything was so wonderful, especially the ABC book and your song!
